Jamie Foxx attended the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday night to accept the 2013 Generation Award. He did so while wearing a shirt that had the phrase “kNOw Justice” above photos of Trayvon Martin and the Newtown kids.

Many intelligent humans would view Jamie Foxx’s shirt as a way a celebrity can bring awareness to America’s young people and remind them that justice has not yet been served for our country’s young victims of gun violence.

Sadly, many humans lack this intelligence…

“This Trayvon Martin case is soooo annoying…now give me my MTV MOVIE AWARDS!”

Props to the guy above who used a gun emoji to criticize a shirt condemning gun violence. Good work, dude.

Basically what they’re trying to say, without saying it, is “why is that evil black thug sullying those poor innocent white children…”

Aiight. So the album, A Few Clowns Short of a Circus, which I have been working on FOREVER is ALMOST DONE.

Listening to the finished product a zillion times is part of my process. I wouldn’t put anything out there that was not scrutinized in this manner. My process has developed over years and years. The fact this is my first solo album is mostly a technicality. I really been around doing shit for a good while.

So since my dashboard is full of titties and ass at the moment, I figured this would be a great time to not only post the cover and track listing, but tell y’all about the album, what inspired it and what I hope to accomplish with it.

First of all, if you’re still reading at this point, thank you. You’re probably one of the people that have supported what I attempt to do with my music which is being as honest as possible with my expression as well as providing the listener with something they haven’t experienced before. People that want more than a dance track or something to ride to should listen to what I do. I do it for us. Not saying people like that don’t wanna shake their ass. Just saying that the whole point is to go to new places and not remain stagnated.

Being over the age of 30, my take on the current climate of Hip Hop is expected to be disgruntled, maybe even a little spiteful, but it’s not. I support freedom of expression even if I don’t agree with your expression. Everybody has the right to say what they want. Everybody also has the right to disagree with what they want. A Few Clowns Short of a Circus is an expression of disdain for those who present one side of the story and not the other.

Smokey Robinson sang on Tears of a Clown

“Now if there’s a smile on my face
It’s only there trying to fool the public…”

and

“…But don’t let my glad expression
Give you the wrong impression…”

This is one of my favorite songs ever and listening to that song is what made me realize that the real issue is the lack of emotional honesty. We go around all day acting like shit is sweet and it’s not. We put on that smile, but be torn up inside. Just like a clown.

The other side of the inspiration is the fact I have never wanted to fit into a box, a label, a title, etc. I’d like to think that I am constantly evolving, so yesterday’s definition can’t be valid for today and today’s definition will expire before tomorrow. Producing an album captures a moment in time. It is a snapshot of the evolutionary process we call life, so the Clowns in this regard are the many forms of myself that have developed during my life. Each one inspires the next to become more and to do more. This process is on-going.

Hopefully this shines some light on what I’m doing here. As my brother-n-law put it, “You can’t make music like this. Nobody is doing that anymore.”

My nigga, XO, just informed me this morning that he is about to be in the lab mixing down the album for the next week or so and my white nigga, D-Kon, informed me that the artwork is also on the way.

So what did I do?

I got geeked and said “let’s drop that mixtape”. And since I do what the fuck I wanna do, here it is. no fanfare, no pomp and whatever the fuck. just some music.

In fact, this music is mostly old joints on albums you may or may not have. So it is really a highlight reel of the past 10 years of my music life. Which is perfect to lead into my debut solo ALBUM.

I honestly got shit to do and don’t have time to do a back cover with track listing right now. most people don’t read that shit nowadays. If you do like that sort of thing, I will list some credits at the bottom of this post.
